1. Support local farmers, fisherman and foragers -Farmer's Markets (Check out food page for times and locations)
2. Eat at local restaurants that are celebrating local foods during October. See www.coastlocalize.org for participating restaurants.
3. Ask your local markets where their produce come from, and buy what has traveled the shortest distance. Request that they highlight local products, to ease identification.
4. Support markets that buy local produce, eggs, and meats. If they don't buy local products, request that they start (research shows that it takes as few as three requests to get supermarkets to add items.)
5. Buy either organic or fair trade for foods not grown in
California
(such as coffee or chocolate)
6. Check labels for additives. Buy the least altered product.
7. Forgo Fast Foods for the month. If you really want to be adventurous, forgo heavily processed food for the month.
8. Throw a lunch, dinner party or potluck using foods grown or processed within 100 miles.
9. Explore your community gardens. You'll be amazed at what's growing here. (contact www.coastlocalize.org to get locations and times to visit.)
10. Begin a container garden with easy to grow lettuce greens and herbs. Start a small winter garden with chard, kale, broccoli, and more.
11. Start a gardening group with neighbors. Help each other by working one garden at a time.
12. Ride a bike or walk to grocery store one day a week.
